CROSSLINKING PLASTICS

E-beam is used to improve the properties of plastics and elastomers through a process called crosslinking.  Acsion uses this process to increase the temperature that plastics can be used at and their stability in the most abusive environments.  Crosslinking can also improve the barrier properties of plastics to both liquids and gases.  Heat-shrinkable plastic tubes and films are also fabricated through a proprietary E-beam-based crosslinking process.

Unique capabilities of E-beam for medical devices:

  • Catheters can be E-beamed to impart differential stiffness and torque along the length of the catheter tube.  This is practically impossible to accomplish with thermal crosslinking techniques.
  • Artificial joints can be made to last longer by improving their wear properties.
