DYNAMIC MECHANICAL ANALYSIS (DMA)

What is DMA?

DMA provides valuable data for characterizing the properties of materials, particularly polymers.  DMA measures the amplitude and phase of the displacement of a sample in response to an applied oscillating force.  The stiffness of the sample is calculated from this data and converted to a modulus to enable sample inter-comparisons. Tan d, the loss tangent or damping factor, is also calculated.  A temperature scan at constant frequency can generate a fingerprint of the material's relaxational processes and its glass transition temperature (Tg).  This technique provides valuable data on polymer structure.
